Garden Design & Landscaping

Let us do ALL the hard work

Louise likes to involve the customer as much, or as little, as they want to be involved. Some customers have a clear and precise idea of what they want in their garden. Others want Balanis to take control and let Louise’s imagination and floral artistry take it’s own natural path with their garden design.

All aspects of the Garden Design are handled by Louise Barby – your sole point of contact throughout. Louise co-ordinates everything, acting as project manager from start to finish. A garden design often involves third party contractors from builders to electricians and carpenters to tree preservation authorities. Balanis keep a professional eye on all of this – leaving the customer with nothing to do but admire the transformation of their garden.

For all the soft landscaping tasks we have our own full-time staff. For other specialist tasks we have access to some of the best garden contractors on the Norfolk coast. • Optional hard landscaping (patios, decking, summer-houses, arbours etc)
  • Optional garden lighting (uplights, downlights, path markers, exterior sockets etc)
  • Optional garden irrigation systems (drip feed with timers for second homes / holiday homes)
  • Provision of an initial draft garden design with mood board
  • Feedback from client followed by presentation of formal garden design (hand drawn by Louise)

The Garden Design Process

The main aspects of Garden Design are covered below.

Initial Consultation

We will meet in your existing garden space, discuss thoughts, ideas and budget requirements.  I also like to understand how you would like to utilise your new garden room, how much maintenance is optimum for you and any key features you would like to integrate.

Site aspect and environmental considerations

I will ensure that we have a clear view of the site aspect, any considerations in surrounding areas, such as flooding/drainage.  I can also coordinate with conservation and/or planning divisions, should this be required.

Draft design proposal

Following the above considerations and discussions, I will create a design mood board and briefing document for you to read through and absorb.  We can meet to walk this through in order to achieve a full understanding of the proposed vision.

Drawings & Plans

If plans are required, this can be achieved with my project management via CAD, if required.  Although, in many cases, being on site and walking through the design, as well as measuring and marking areas out in real time, can be very effective in enabling visualisation of the complete design.

Construction and Hard Landscaping

I fully project manage my landscape team in order to ensure we fully achieve the design objective.  Hard material samples will be provided if required.

Soft Landscaping

Planting areas will be defined in line with the design brief and planting completed by both myself and the team, as required.  I am wholly involved in the planting of each design.  All trees and plants, as well as any features are sourced from trusted suppliers.  Many of which I have worked with for many years.

After care

On design completion and client sign off, a document will be created providing details of each plant/tree and the care required.  This can be utilised by a garden maintenance contractor or by the client, if they would prefer to maintain the garden themselves.  By providing the guide, the client feels fully supported and confident to take ownership of the garden care in order to ensure the plants and trees establish effectively, ensuring longevity of the design.  Reputable garden maintenance companies can be recommended, should this be a requirement.

Norfolk Holiday Home to small Country Estates

Our customers range from 1 bedroom holiday homes with small courtyard gardens of less than 20 feet square (that’s about 6m x 6m for the metric folk) to customers with over 50 acres including woodland, pasture and formal beds. Don’t think that just because you have a small garden we won’t be interested to have you as a customer, we want you to be proud of your garden, no matter how small. We’d probably have to say “no” to Holkham Hall, Sandringham, or Houghton Estate, but we’d love to give our opinion and share some experiences. Please visit our Garden Projects Gallery for some recent examples of work undertaken by Louise around the North Norfolk coast. Balanis have completed garden designs from Dersingham & Docking, through Heacham & Hunstanton onwards to Holme, Thornham, Brancaster and the Burnhams.

Garden Borders as you like them

Some of our customers want their garden and it’s borders to be as maintenance free as possible. This doesn’t mean they have to be bland and boring. Louise’s extensive plant knowledge will give you the low maintenance borders that give pleasure month after month with little more than some dead heading and keeping on top of the weeds.
